Weekend CVU Sports Roundup

Edd Merritt spent Saturday on various sports fields around the area and sent in these photos of CVU's (mostly) successful weekend of playoffs. We've got pics of football from the semi-final win over Mount Mansfield, 21-14 (they play for the Division II championship this Saturday against Colchester at Essex High School field), boys' soccer from the state Division I title 2-0 win over Burr and Burton Academy and girls' from the state Division I title game that they lost to Burlington, 1-0.

Steeple Down

On October 20, the steeple of the Charlotte Congregational Church came down. During the ongoing restoration project, rot was discovered that was more extensive than anticipated and it was determined that the cost to do the work without removing the steeple would be considerably more than if the steeple was removed.

Pumpkin Man Invades CCS

The weather cooperated this morning so freaks and princesses - and Pumpkin Man - turned out for this year's Charlotte Central School Halloween parade. Here, thanks to Kerrie Pugh, are a few of the wonderful costumes. We think that's Interim Principal Sandra Jump as the Mad Hatter, below, but as always, Pumpkin Man's identity remains shrouded in secrecy.

Linda Gilbert sent in this colorful photo of a monarch butterfly that stopped by her garden on its way to Mexico last week. It and two of its friends seemed to prefer the zinnias over other remaining flowers. Good to know Charlotte is on their travel route.

There were a lot of dogs at the Charlotte Tractor Parade on Sunday; most didn't seem to mind the crowds or noise. Whether they like watching tractor parades or just didn't want to stay behind at home was unclear.

Huge crowds, including scads of adorable children, music, pumpkins, apple pie and of course, tons of tractors. What are you doing with your apples?

First we picked them (at the nearly-in-Charlotte Shelburne Orchards) and shared a couple pieces of Nick Cowles' gigantic apple pie. Then we hauled our bags home and contemplated what we were going to do with them all.

So far, I've made apple crisp and apple butter. Here's the recipe for the apple butter, which is much easier than pie:

Peel and slice apples to fill the crock pot (13-15) (I used a combination of macs and cortlands).

Cook on low overnight (8 to 15 hours - it's an easy going recipe).

In the morning, mash and stir. Add 2 t. cinnamon, 1/2 t. ground cloves, up to 2 cups of sugar or other sweetener depending on how you like it - I added 3/4 cup agave syrup; stir again.

Then cook on low for another six hours covered and a couple more uncovered until it's as thick as you want it.

I froze it in 3 one-pint containers, which left about a cup to spread on our toast and waffles this week.

Now what to do with the other half-bushel?

The Charlotte Brew

We caught Edd Merritt at home last week brewing up a batch of Irish stout. Edd makes his own beer from time to time, although hasn't tried this particular recipe before. From top to bottom, here is how it's done: (1) the grains are pulled out of the wort after simmering for an hour or so, (2) malt is poured into the pot for another round of simmering, (3) stirring the yeast into the wort, (4) cooling the mix as quickly as possible (no snow banks handy!). Our beer is then poured into a fermentor, where it sits for two weeks, and then goes into a carboy, or secondary fermentor for two more weeks before it's bottled. We need a name for this batch - Eastside Stout? Charlotte Dark?

If you'll be in Burlington enjoying the Church Street madness, be sure to stop in at the Firehouse Gallery (149 Church Street) to see Charlotte-raised glass artist Ethan Bond-Watts' new piece that's part of a big exhibit called The Energy Project, which "explores the future of Vermont's landscape as it grapples with the aesthetic challenges of a carbon-constrained world," according to the brochure. Ethan's piece is a show-stopper and hangs right inside the front door of the gallery; there are nine more interesting and thoughtful new commissions to see while you're there.

Here's a way to take advantage of the hot summer weekend: invite yourself along on a friend's boat for water skiing. The lake temperature yesterday was 77 and it will likely go up another degree or two over the next couple of days. It doesn't get much warmer that, folks, so head down to the Town Beach or out on a boat and enjoy the heat. Snow skiing isn't the only game in town!

Charlotte kids are staying busy over the summer - here are a few having adventures at home and abroad. There's Annie, Laura, Ruby and Sammi with their chaparone David Tanzer in Paris performing with the Vermont Youth Orchestra. Then there's Claire running with the 7- to 14-year-olds at the state track meet in St. Johnsbury last weekend and Drew pitching for the Babe Ruth all star Charlotte team.

Be the Ball

This is Logan. He likes to lie on the dock with his ball. Sometimes the ball rolls off his paws and falls in the water. Then Logan looks at the ball floating in the water real hard. Then he looks at people on the dock. It's clear he's saying, "Doesn't anybody see that my ball fell in? Again?" Eventually, if no one retrieves it for him, Logan will walk to the shore and swim out to get it, but he'd rather just telegraph his message to the swimmers and sunbathers. Then he'll take his ball and lie back down on the dock, right next to the edge, and the whole process starts again.

Thanks to Lisa Beal for sending in this photo and report of a successful family fishing outing. Lisa wrote, "It was my husband's birthday (Erik Beal), but it was 10-year-old Shane who caught this large mouth bass in Lake Champlain in July. We threw it back, but based on our estimates from the photo, we believe it was as much as 4.5 pounds and 19 inches long." That's Shane's sister Heidi on the left.

Here are a few scenes from yesterday's 15th annual Town Party. The weather held, adorable kids played with the rescue pugs and tried out the fire engines. Hazel Prindle was there, chatting with Mary Lighthall at the Historical Society table. The Charlotte News staff posed for a group pic and served Judy Laberge's cake to those that stopped by. A big Thank You! to everyone who left their donation - we'll be drawing the winners of the raffle later today. It was great to see so many Charlotters catching up with each other, hauling around their books from the sale.

How Many Roads Does It Take...

Lots of talk this week about the ancient road issue again - what to do? There's a Selectboard meeting next Monday (May 18) at 7 at the Town Hall to discuss whether they'll let them go or try to turn one or two into trails - or let the landowner use it to provide access for a future subdivision. You can cast your vote now in the new poll to the right. Click here to see the reports and the map in a larger size.

In the meantime, Martha Perkins wrote this alert:

Ancient Roads, Again.

They are located everywhere in Charlotte.
Every landowner in Charlotte – it is important that you be concerned that an ancient road, drawn up and used in the 1700’s and 1800’s, but abandoned, may soon be determined a legal public way, placed on the Charlotte Town Map, thus become, once again in the 21^st century, open to the public.   The SB will decide which roads will become, again, public ways, open to the public, and placed on the Charlotte Town Map.

Take notice, landowners. No landowner will be notified directly by the SB, as usually is the case when a public action may affect a nearby/abutting landowner.

You need to be responsible for tending to your own land and the impact the ancient road may have on it. That’s the way it will work, this time. No notice from SB – legal or not!

The Selectboard will review these roads on Monday, May 18 – next Monday. If you are concerned that you may be impacted by this board’s decision, attend the meeting. If you are not there and the ancient road is near you or on your land and you do not speak up, it may become a public way. It is OK to speak out.

It is important that every landowner sit up and take notice of this issue, for the following reasons:
1.     Ancient roads designed long, long ago are known to be located such that they run through a 21^st century house whose land was legally subdivided and house was legally built and bought.

2.    Ancient Roads do cut through landowners’ property.

3.    Ancient Roads are being considered as walking/hiking trails throughout the Town. While walking/hiking trails are a healthy thing and are valuable to all of us, you may not want a trail to be located next to your house or through your land.

Now, to learn more: Google Town of Charlotte/Planning Commission; then click on Ancient Roads. The PC carefully researched each ancient road for its possible value to the Town. Their report to the SB, a map of the ancient roads, and other important information is right there and you should avail yourself of this, if you are worried.

The ancient roads are everywhere throughout Charlotte. You will be surprised when you look at the map.

Fortunately, this issue may be resolved soon after a long time, thanks to PC’s good research and SB persistence, via an appropriate process or not.

This letter in no way diminishes my appreciation for the time and effort the individuals on the SB put in on behalf of our town.

Hannah emerges from the brush with a piece of trash beside Hinesburg Road yesterday, doing her part for Green Up Day. Her mother, Rose Bernier, and friend Joyce cheer her on.

Dave and Eli Quickel were having a grand time yesterday afternoon cleaning up their stretch of Hinesburg Road. The weather was fine, there was less trash than expected and Eli excitedly told me that they'd found a "big hole" that Dave said might be the home of the coyote they'd seen around their fields.

Here's a pic of the coyote that has moved into the woods near the ferry. Has anyone else seen him/her? There's a litter of pups that warble at night. CCS Principal Smith Resigning

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Here's what Monica Smith sent to CCS parents this morning:

I am writing to inform you that I submitted my resignation to the School Board last evening. This is the right time in my life to "take a break" and it is a good time for Charlotte Central School, as well. The Action Plans for 2009-2012 will be completed by June. The Strategic Plan runs through 2012. The School Board is focusing on preparing a bond to present to the voters for needed renovations to the buildings. Our students are doing very well on academic measures. Teachers continue to keep up with the latest research in teaching and learning. CCS is well on its way to integrating technology into the learning of our students. We will be going into our second year of implementing the Positive Behavior Supports System to promote positive behaviors in our students and diminish negative behaviors. I could go on and on.

Please know that I will cherish forever my nineteen years at Charlotte Central. It is an indescribable joy to be part of the lives of the thousands of students who have grown and developed daily at CCS over those years.

A Loss

Yesterday much of the town came together to say goodbye to Cowboy Lewis, who died last week at the age of 80. Flags were at half-mast and dozens of cars were parked up and down Church Hill Road as hundreds attended the service that honored one of the true originals of Charlotte and to tell the many stories of a life lived to the fullest.

"Here is a shot of the VELCO transmission lines heading underground beneath Ferry Road at the Waldorf School and a wooden pole standing naked after losing its lines. Apparently, although they just removed the overhead lines last week, power has been flowing sub-soil since the beginning of December. It goes underground to the substation by the old railway depot. How about starting up an electric train?"

In this picture, Germaine LeClair and Aileen Chutter (the Senior Center is exhibiting her quilts this month) talk about quilts at the Quinlan Schoolhouse Open House last Sunday. Germaine grew up in the house that Jay Vogler and his family live now, and where Pizza on Earth is, as well as Stony Loam CSA. She moved there from Quebec and started school in first grade not knowing any English. There's always something - or someone - interesting at the Quinlan School every time I stop in, not the least of which is good hot cider and cookies.

New Kitty

Meet Lucca, a new face in town. The Lyons family adopted him last week from the local humane society. He's tiny but can hold his own against the family dog (who tries very hard to be gentle). Lucca is thankful to be with his new family for Thanksgiving, and it appeared that the feeling is mutual.

Alas, the lettuce could not hold out in this recent cold snap. Even here, in the banana belt of New England, winter must come, although it seems a little harsh to be so cold before Thanksgiving - and no warming trend in the forecast. So we adjust, dig out the long underwear, put on an extra layer and hunker down.

Still growing

Let it be known that Charlotters can have freshly harvested lettuce in mid-November. It was planted while the weather was still warm - more recent plantings came up about an inch but then had second thoughts about proceeding. I'm hoping that the larger plants will hang on until Thanksgiving and next year I'll try a larger late-season crop.

The Land of Beautiful Sunsets

It's the time of year when the sun sets directly across from Charlotte, into the Adirondacks. This happens twice a year, of course; now and in February when the sun is heading back to the south. (And yes, I know it isn't really the sun moving around. And it doesn't really set into the Adirondacks.) Anyway, when the clouds are right there is no place on earth with more beautiful sunsets, like the one pictured here.

There was one boat still on its mooring in the north half of McNeil's Cove today. It's certainly been warm enough for a late-season sail. Maybe the owner has weekend plans for it - let's all enjoy the unseasonal weather while we can.

Now that we've reset our timing for the colder months of the year, this morning's light was welcome after the dark, windy night. Thanks to Charlotte News' Linda Williamson, who snapped this photo of the Old Brick Store clock as a timely reminder of time passing.

And speaking of time...ONLY TWO MORE DAYS TO VOTE! There are important town and state candidates and issues to be decided upon, as well as the presidential election. Don't let it pass you by.

Stick-y

I hear it's stick season, according to the media, the name for this dark and dreary time of year between the brilliant foliage and glittering snowscapes. There's still a mix of leaves and sticks around the house but it will look a lot stick-ier after this storm. It's windy, wet and wild outside and I'm thankful to be warm and dry after a short walk with the dogs. Meanwhile, Charlotte is counting down to Halloween, only three days away!

Finally got home around 11 last night and was immediately assaulted by these two ferocious corgis (you can see how violent they are in the first photo; don't let their peaceful demeanors fool you). It's great to be back but YIKES is it cold outside! Must go find the cache of mittens, scarves, etc.

I know it's cold and snowy there but I've been in the San Jose, California airport for over 17 hours now, except for four hours at a grungy motel from 3:30 to 7:30 this morning, and I can tell you that I'd much rather be back in Charlotte simultaneously complaining about the weather and enjoying the first snow.

Into the Woods

Fall is the perfect time for a walk in Williams Woods. The bugs are gone, the ground isn't muddy and fewer leaves mean more more light. The scouts have built a lot more board walkways, especially at the beginning of the trail, although there are still a lot of roots to watch out for. This compact gem of a walk through the trees is an ideal antidote to a busy day. Try it soon, before the odd mushrooms are covered in snow.

We've got tractors!

What a day for a tractor parade! Spectators couldn't have asked for a more beautiful fall day. Carrie Spears and her crew had everything ready the day before, including lots of new signs, and on Sunday afternoon it all seemed to run like clockwork. An endless line of tractors rolled down the hill for an hour and large crowds of all ages waved from the sidelines. Here are a few of the images from yesterday.

Going Orange

This is one of my favorite fall scenes these days, driving up the hill on Ferry Road toward the four corners stop. I've been watching the large maple gradually turn orange and when the light is right, the white of the newly-painted structure against the tree and blue sky really catches the eye.

Here is a crop of Hidatsa shield figure beans from Jill Lyon's garden on State Park Road. These Hidatsa indians were experts at raising corn, squah, beans and sunflowers, according to Jill (and the seed package). Jill is in the process of drying and husking them; no word yet on how they taste.

Calm in the cove

There are still a lot of boats in McNeil's Cove, though a few were pulled yesterday. Yesterday's dead calm was perfect for kayaking but not so good for sailing. Let's all get down to the water one more time before the snow flies.

Monarchs on the move

There have been a lot of monarch butterflies around town this week, enjoying the perfect fall weather. According to Wikipedia, the one pictured here is a female (darker veins) and she deposits her eggs as she migrates south. I also learned that the name came from Samuel H. Scudderin 1874 because "it is one of the largest of our butterflies, and rules a vast domain." Although it might also be named in honour of King William, Prince of Orange. Either way, it's a favorite sign of the season.

Peace Day

This was taken late this afternoon. A woman passing by on her bike stopped to contemplate the flags planted in front of the Charlotte Congregational Church for the International Day of Peace. Four thousand flags were placed in honor of soldiers who have died in Iraq.

Bike ride bonus

Took a bike ride on Saturday with a friend and noticed lots of things for sale (or free) beside the road, including sweet corn, zucchinis, tomatoes, windows and these free lilacs offered on Greenbush Road south of the four corners. Now if I could only attach one to my bike!

Coming to a tree near you! Brightly colored leaves! Yes, it's begun, as shown in this pic taken Tuesday. The smaller maples are turning red, the willows are more yellow. Nights are sharply cooler although no frost in my area yet. Today is another perfect fall day - sunny and warm - so get outside and enjoy!

Here's a pic from last night's Selectboard meeting, which was partly a hearing to talk about making changes to Land Use Regulations that would allow retail use on the corner that is now the Citgo service station and Uncle Sam's creemee stand. In this photo, Selectboard member Winslow Ladue points out current setbacks on a sketch furnished by Jerry Farnsworth, with assistance by audience member Martha Perkins. We should all take some time to think about what we'd like that corner to look like and what's best for the town. We will have a chance to vote on whether we want the changes or not, probably on the November election day.

Fields of Gold

I returned from our annual summer trip to South Carolina to spend a week on the beach with John's family (hot, humid, no hot tea). We got home at 2:00 a.m. thanks to another flying adventure and the next morning, I was greeted by...yellow! The blooming goldenrod turned fields to the golden late-summer hue. Enjoy these perfect days and cool nights!

A summer treat!

It's the height of blueberry season! All the rain means the picking is very good if you can get out there between the showers. We went to the Charlotte Berry Farm this morning and will be visiting Pelke's in a couple of days for more. After coming home, I called my Aunt Donna in Buffalo and whipped up this pie for dessert -- so easy!

Try it yourself:

Aunt Donna's pie crust recipe

(Makes enough for three double-crust pies.)

In a large bowl, measure out:
5 cups white flour
2 1/4 cups shortening
1 1/2 teaspoon salt

Combine with a pastry cutter or fork until pea-sized lumps.

Take a 1 cup measure and add 1 egg and 2 tsp. cider vinegar; mix and then add water to the one cup line. Make a well in the flour/shortening mix and pour in the egg mixture all at once. Mix with a fork, cover with plastic and let sit for 30 to 60 minutes.
Then dump it out onto a floured board, cut into 6 portions. Freeze 4 for later.
Flatten and roll out the last two for your pie.

I brushed the top crust with an egg white wash and sprinkled it with sugar. We're trying to hold out until after dinner but might have to start with dessert first!

Shirley Bean reacts to a comment by Cowboy Lewis at his 80th birthday party yesterday. Nearly 100 well wishers dropped by the Senior Center to share stories and have some cake. It was a lively afternoon with a lot of fond reminiscences, and we were all happy to see Cowboy looking so good.

Here are a few towels hanging on the clothesline of a Thompson's Point camp, hung during the short time between showers yesterday afternoon. This picture was taken from my kayak yesterday. It was a perfect evening to be on the lake. The water was flat but there was a light breeze and a few sailboats out. After a hot summer day and an afternoon thunderstorm, it was great to be cooling off in the water, especially since today's unrelenting rain means we had to spend all day inside!

Charlotte 'Shrooms!

Here are just a couple of the mushrooms from my yard that are enjoying the wet summer. According to AllExperts.com (http://en.allexperts.com/q/Lawns-725/Mushrooms-yard.htm), mushrooms in the grass (by the way, try googling mushrooms and grass together sometime) are not a good thing. Their response: "First off, if you RAKE daily, you'll get the itsy bitsy mushrooms before they get to be softball sized. ... Rake and the problem will be over for the next 24 hrs."
I don't know about you, but raking the yard every day, which is just a field mown short, would come pretty close to the end of my to-do list.

The Market Opens!

Have a taste! Rick Benson offers samples of his salmon salad to a lucky customer.

The Garden Market opened last week in the former Flying Pig building. Rick prepares food at his Burlington waterfront restaurant, Taste, and brings it to Charlotte for us. On Sunday, meat choices included sesame-glazed meatballs, spicy bbq ribs, grilled sausages and aged, organically-raised beef steaks ready for the grill. There were many wonderful choices of vegetables and desserts to with, or instead of, the meat. Stop by on a summer evening; hours are currently 10 to 6, Monday through Saturday, and 10 to 5 on Sundays. Eventually, the market will be open from 7 to 7. Call Rick at 425-5336 to see what's in the cooler today.

Good Neighbors

Team Eating Well, consisting of Jeff Teplitz, Claudine Safar, Jay Pilcer and Lisa Gosselin participated in last weekend's Tour de Cure, raising money for diabetes research. The Charlotte News and the folks at EatingWell Media Group share the office building on Ferry Road and we love to applaud their many accomplishments, both in and out of the office.

Here's what the website says about the Tour (at tour.diabetes.org, choose Vermont): "The 2008 Vermont Tour de Cure will take place on Sunday, June 1 at Dorset Park in South Burlington. Participants choose one of four different routes: 10K, 25K, 50K or 100K. Riders travel through scenic countryside, past picturesque farmland and along the shores of Lake Champlain, enjoying grand vistas of the Adirondacks and Green Mountains.

Sounds like fun! Maybe next year... In the meantime, check out EatingWell's excellent website at eatingwell.com.

Selling East Charlotte

Judging from the number of images he sent me, Charlotte News' Contributing Editor Edd Merritt has been living in his truck, eating street food and wearing out his camera. Thanks to Edd's efforts, Charlotte's Web will have new posts and lots of new pictures while I am off wading through the rainy northwest U.S. for a couple of weeks.

Today's pics were taken at the set up for Carrie Spears' inaugural East Charlotte community yard sale staged last weekend at Baptist Corners. We hope it's an annual event where Charlotters come and sit around visiting for the day and then take home each other's stuff until the following year. Thanks to Carrie for organizing the event!

The Mashnee Launches

Congratulations to George Darling and his talented crew of Darling's Boatworks on the successful completion of a 3 1/2-year project of the total restoration of Mashnee, the gorgeous 1902 Buzzards Bay 30' sloop that launched at the Point Bay Marina yesterday. Here's a video of the end of the launch (which did not involve any splash, but instead was a slow, careful process):

The ceremony began with speeches by owner Jan Rozendaal and George, who thanked his crew and the subcontractors and his wife, Pam. Here's a video of a bit of Jan's comments:

There was a large turnout despite the rainy, cold morning. Warmed by the muffins, scones and hot coffee, we all trooped over to the boat after the talks, which rested in her cradle straps of the lift. Jan's wife placed a traditional wreath on the bowsprit and then the Mashnee was gently lowered into the water to the applause of the crowd, where she bobbed magnificently in the breeze.

Backyard Birding

Welcome back to the Warbling Vireo (I think) that's been living in our yard for years. He (I think) sits in a tree and warbles all day, a striking descending trill, over and over. I don't know how he eats because he never stops warbling. The repetitiveness of it used to bother me but now I've become accustomed to his call and listen for his song, a favorite sign of summer.
